Welcome to our new Wedding Blog!

This blog stemmed from a recent conversation we had about all the outstanding weddings we’ve hosted here – from the intimate ceremony for twenty guests to the new husband and wife departing via helicopter! We decided that we need to share these special moments and suggestions with new brides!

We hope that you will be inspired by our imagery and commentary about trends, real weddings and general advice about your big day from our passionate bridal consultants who will help plan the wedding of your dreams!

Please make yourself at home and enjoy our blog and follow us by email so you’ll remain up to date on everything wedding at the VBCC!

We welcome your feedback and comments and look forward to sharing with each other!

Bridal Spotlight: Chris and Tricia McCord

Name: Chris and Tricia McCord

Wedding Date: April 4, 2009

Ceremony Site: Virginia Beach Convention Center, Meeting Room 1A

Reception Site: Virginia Beach Convention Center, Meeting Room 1 B-D

Photographer: Catie’s Photography

DJ: Tidewater DJs

What first drew you to the VBCC?

We wanted to get married near the beach. We looked couple of places that were on the water and they were prohibitively expensive.

What made you decide to book?

We decided to go with the VBCC not only because of the price, but because of the level of service we were receiving. We felt as though we were given a larger part in the decisions from the menu to being able to decorate in a way that suited us.

We also really liked that we could have the wedding ceremony and reception in the same place. The guests went in one room for the ceremony, went out into the prefunction for the cocktail hour, and then went right in for the reception. No one had to drive anywhere and there was plenty of room for everyone.

What was your favorite part of planning your wedding?

Tricia: "My favorite part of planning the wedding was the actual planning believe it or not!. I had a lot of fun comparing cake decorators, photographers, DJs, and florists. I loved picking out everything knowing it was going to be exactly what I wanted."

What was the most challenging part of planning your wedding?

Tricia: "The most challenging part of planning the wedding was having the vision to see it all come together. I had a photographer, DJ, florist, and cake, but how was it all going to come together? I worried about whether or not they would know where to go, if it would get set up. Also, about three months before the wedding I moved out of the area and wouldn’t be around to handle those last minute details if something came up. Having the VBCC staff there really calmed my nerves- I knew that they would help my vendors get in the building and be ready for showtime."

What was the most memorable moment of your wedding day?

Chris: "I will never forget the moment when I first saw Tricia in her dressing walking down the aisle. I felt so lucky to have found somebody so beautiful and that meant so much to me."

Tricia: "I have so many fond memories of my wedding day. It was the best day of my life. Things that stick out are: Feeling beautiful in my dress, walking down the aisle and trying not to cry, saying my vows and believing every word I was saying, dancing with my dad, and just feeling overall relaxed and not worried about a thing."

What was your favorite thing you ate at your wedding reception?

Tricia: "While we were lining up for the introductions and listening to the DJ tell us what to do I snacked on spinach and artichoke dip and it was amazing. Being that we were married almost 3 years ago, I remember eating my dinner and I remember eating the cake, I remember it was good, but I don’t really remember what those tasted like. I do remember that dip. :)"

What is your favorite photo from your wedding day?

It’s the one of us at the Veteran's Memorial in front of the VBCC.

What is your favorite part of being married?
Chris: "That I got to marry my best friend. I'm so comfortable around Tricia and simply couldn't imagine being with anybody else."

Tricia: "My favorite part of being married is the security and stability Chris brings to my life. I love having him there when I wake up in the morning and in the evening after work. I love having someone else to mow the lawn, do the dishes, and carry the heavy stuff. I love sharing life’s adventures with Chris."

Anything else you want to share with our blog readers?
Also about the food – we had a little bit of food and drinks in the dressing rooms for the bridal party and it was perfect. Having that little bit to snack on right before the ceremony was just what we needed.

Photo Idea: Outside!

Just because you are getting married indoors or your reception is indoors with us, it doesn't mean you can't get some great outdoor shots at the VBCC!
The building itself offers a picturesque backdrop for some stunning photos:

And who says all your outdoor photos have to be of you and the bridal party? Our outdoor locations offer some wonderful places to shoot those wedding day props that you'll want to remember.

Photo Idea: Ballroom Ladies' Lounge!

No matter where you book in the building- the Ballroom Ladies' Lounge is always available for photo opportunities:

The lounge is long and narrow with a full wall of mirrors- it offers a neutral and fun background for the bride and her girls to play around with.

Photo Idea: Escalators!

Since we have so many great places to take photos- wedding photographers love to get creative in our space!
One trend we've noticed: the escalators!

From formal shots of the bride and groom:

To a great way to get the whole bridal party pictured (in a less formal pose):

To those fun poses that really let your (and your bridal party's) personality shine:

Where else can you get fun shots like that?

Photo Idea: Observation Deck!

Looking for a unique place to take some photos of the bride and groom and/or the bridal party during your wedding here at the VBCC?

Might we suggest the Tower Observation Deck!

The Observation Deck is on the fourth floor (the very top!) of our tower (don't worry- there is an elevator) and offers a wooden open-air deck perfect for taking some shots you can get nowhere else.

Take a look at some examples:

Ceremony Space

Another great feature of the VBCC is that we have the space and ability to hold not only your amazing reception- but your ceremony as well.

Some great things about having your ceremony and reception in one place:

1. You have the option of booking our dressing rooms and can get ready here and never have to take your white dress outside.
2. No worries about weather!
3.Your guests come to one place and no one gets lost driving from the ceremony to the reception
4. You save money on Limo transportation in that you don't have to pay to get the bridal party (and you and the groom) from one place to another.
5. You have LOTS of time for photos between the ceremony and reception as you don't have to factor in transportation.
6. No one is ever late to cocktail hour!

Need some inspiration on how to make a meeting space into a ceremony space? Chat with your building event manager-  or check out these photos and see how some of our former brides made it happen!
